Where We Stand with the Reform of the International System
During the GIOYA HEI & UPEACE Online Workshop “Where We Stand with the Reform of the International System”, Jean Paul Laborde offered a clear and pragmatic reflection on the future of multilateral cooperation.
Drawing on his extensive experience within the United Nations system and international diplomacy, Laborde argued that the world is living through a moment of transition, but not yet of true transformation. Global crises are increasingly interconnected, while many international institutions still respond through structures and procedures shaped by another era.
His contribution focused on the need for a more dynamic Secretariat, a more coherent United Nations system, and practical reforms capable of strengthening credibility, effectiveness and legitimacy.
Laborde also underlined the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy, civil society, responsible business actors and universities in shaping a renewed model of international cooperation — one that remains faithful to the founding promise of the United Nations Charter: “We the peoples.”
